Councillors have expresssed their sadness and demanded answers after the closure of a much-loved bakery in a Suffolk town.

It was announced on Thursday that TOAST would not be proceeding with its takeover of Weston's Bakery in Sudbury's Gaol Lane, which announced in July it was shutting after owners Pat and Chris Weston were involved in a serious crash.

In statements on social media, it was revealed that an agreement was unable to be reached for a new tenancy with the landlord.

The decision has been been met with sadness by councillors and people who live in Sudbury.

Laura Smith, who represents south west Sudbury at Babergh District Council, said: "It is such a shame that Sudbury is losing this much-valued business.

"It would be very frustrating indeed if the building is going to stand empty like so many others in Sudbury needlessly, but unfortunately the council has no control over private landlords or the rent they charge.

"I feel for the workers who have had such an up-and-down year. "

Sudbury town councillor Adrian Stohr credited TOAST for trying to save the business.

He said: "I give credit to TOAST for trying to save a business and jobs for the town of Sudbury, but the town deserves to know what has happened and why has this company had to pull out in such a quick and short notice.

"We as a town need to get to the bottom of this, the town needs more shops and business. I demand answers."

Councillor Jessie Carter added: "Local businesses play a crucial role in the economic and social well-being of their communities.

"Supporting local businesses helps to create a sense of community and promotes sustainable development, making them an essential part of any thriving community."

The last day of trading at the bakery will be Monday, October 9.
