Huge potholes that have "sheared half a dozen car tyres" have been lambasted by a parish councillor.

The village of Foxearth, near Sudbury on the Suffolk and Essex border, has been plagued by a number of large potholes in recent months.

Works have been scheduled to occur for a number of months but are yet to take place, leaving drivers worrying their tyres will be left with severe damage.

"It is terrible. I think that as a parish council and I think all the residents agree," said Mark Posen, chairman of the Foxearth and Liston Parish Council.

"The surface of the road is unacceptable. They did some patching work from the Rodbridge road, that has now been filled in but they did not continue through the village."

Throughout the village there are a potholes of varying sizes, but the largest sits outside of Foxearth Hall.

Mr Posen added: "There was a really bad pothole that must have sheared half a dozen car tyres or more. The pothole is so deep it has ripped the tyre off the car."

The parish council chairman believes the problem is caused by people using the village as a cut through, making the road surface worse.

While repairs are due to take place, Mr Posen said they have not been told when works will take.

He added: "We have not been told as a council or community when that work is scheduled for. I do not see any scheduling or the road for the next three months."

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: "Carriageway patching works are planned for five locations in Foxearth as part of our jet patcher programme.

"Two further locations in the village will also receive repairs thanks to the additional Essex Highways’ crews added to the team earlier this year."
