A pub that has stood empty since January has had a new lease of life ahead of its reopening this week.

The George in Cavendish was sadly closed in January after the former owners struggled to recover after the pandemic.

Last week, a post on Instagram hinted that the pub was under new ownership and connected to the team behind The Vine in Great Bardfield in Essex.

Spencer Martin, Carl Cooper and Spencer Hewitt are the team behind the popular pub and have confirmed that they have taken on the project, along with a new joint owner Jordan Adams.

"The Vine opened in July last year and has been really well received," said Mr Martin, who is also one of the owners.

The pub specialises in an extensive range of gourmet burgers, the menu of which will also be used at The George.

"We have done all of the fine dining stuff," said Mr Martin.

"These aren't 'just' burgers - we wanted to focus on one style of food and do it really well.

"We want to be as consistent with our food as possible."

The pub in Cavendish has undergone a full internal and external renovation.

"It was lovely before," said Jordan Adams, joint owner of The George.

"We wanted to change it to fit with the brand of The Vine better.

"Darker colours have been used inside to make it feel cosier."

Mr Hewitt added: "We want to rescue these beautiful pubs in amazing villages."

The owners are keen to keep the atmosphere as laid back and informal as possible, which Mr Adams believes draws people to the pub - as well as the 'divine' burger menu.

There are options other than burgers on the menu, including a 'roast wrap' - brisket and roasted vegetables served in a giant Yorkshire pudding with a side of roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and gravy on the side.

The people on both sides of the bar are really important to the owners.

"This industry is full of owners who don't treat their staff correctly," said Mr Hewitt.

"It is a big family at The Vine and we look after everyone who works for us.

"It will be exactly the same at The George."

The pub is set to open this week, but an official date is yet to be released.
