A Barclays bank in a Suffolk town will close down for the final time this week. 

In August the banking giant announced its Beccles branch will close down on Friday, November 24. 

A statement from Barclays about the closure said: "Back when we opened this branch, visiting us in person was one of the only ways to do your banking.

"Now, as there are lots of ways to manage your money without even leaving your home, we’re seeing many customers choosing to bank using our app, and online or telephone banking.

"This has had a big impact on the number of customers coming in to see us."

It comes after HSBC closed its branch in the town in June after seeing a decline in footfall. 

Research carried out by Barclays said that "19 customers use this branch regularly as the only way to do their banking" and "19pc of this branch’s customers have used nearby branches in the last 12 months".

Although the bank is set to close, Beccles Town Council has agreed a special measure to ensure Barclays still has a presence in the town. 

A town council meeting heard that Barclays has been in discussion with Beccles Library about renting a room to operate from for 24 hours per week over four days.

However, with the library currently under refurbishment until the new year, the town council has delegated authority to its clerk to find a suitable location for November and December to rent Barclays a room to operate.
