A west Suffolk building society branch will remain closed for the foreseeable future after its cash machine was stolen during a ram raid.

Officers were called to an incident at Nationwide in High Street in Newmarket at about 4.50am on Monday.

On arrival, police found the ATM had been stolen during the raid.

A police cordon remains in place as officers carry out investigations in the area

A spokesman for Nationwide said the branch will be closed for the foreseeable future as a result of the incident.

He said: "We’re assisting the police with their enquiries following an incident at our Newmarket branch.

"Unfortunately, due to the extent of damage caused, the branch will remain closed for the foreseeable future and those branch colleagues will be working in other surrounding branches.

"Customers needing to use a branch can use any in the surrounding area, such as Ely. Locations and opening hours can be checked on our website.”

A JCB telehandler was used to smash into the wall of the building society branch and remove the cash machine, parts of which were later loaded into a Luton van, a Suffolk police spokesman said.

The van then made off in convoy with a white Mercedes A Class towards Cambridgeshire, with the JCB left behind in High Street.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said officers believe four suspects were involved and were all dressed in dark-coloured clothing and were wearing balaclavas.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident and are also asking anyone who was driving in the Newmarket area between 4.30am and 5.15am on Monday and has a dashcam fitted in their vehicle, to review the footage for anything that may help.

Anyone with information related to the incident is being asked to contact West CID at Bury St Edmunds police station, quoting crime reference number 69861/23.
