A giant gingerbread house made entirely from crochet has been unveiled after months of work near a village's 13ft crochet Christmas tree.

The gingerbread house, which is made up of 362 crocheted squares and 192 roof tiles is now on display in Tostock, near Bury St Edmunds.

It was made by a group of 16 people from the village who came together in January and decided to create the sculpture following the success of their 13ft Christmas tree last year.

The main organiser for this project, Nicki Callow said: "After the community came together to make the Christmas tree last year, we wanted to do something this year.

"We decided to do a gingerbread house so I went out and bought 72 balls of gingerbread-coloured wool and distributed them to all the ladies and asked them to make six-inch squares.

"I put a plastic box by my front door with more supplies and they dropped off their squares as and when and by around June or July time, they had done all the squares so we started sewing them together.

"We've been decorating it since then and three men in the village have made the frame and it's all come together nicely."

This was a real village community project, with wool also being donated by local carpenter Elliott Lebbon.

The house stands at 1.8 metres high.

Nicki continued: "It's a good community project.

"We're a small village, there's only around 400 residents, and it's just people coming together, creating something lovely and forming a lovely group.

"I've received some lovely comments on it, and if you go out into the village, there's always someone looking at it and taking photos."

The house is now up until after Christmas, and is stood next to the 13ft Christmas Tree the group created last year.
