The serial killer Steve Wright has been named by national media as the man who was rearrested on suspicion of murdering 17-year-old Victoria Hall more than 24 years ago.

Victoria was last seen alive in the early hours of September 19, 1999, in High Road in Trimley St Mary, near Felixstowe, having walked home with a friend from a night out in the seaside town.

Publications including the BBC, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Sun, The Times and others have now named Wright, known as the 'Suffolk Strangler', as the man rearrested on suspicion of murder.

This newspaper has been unable to independently verify these reports.

However, when questioned by this newspaper Suffolk police did not confirm or deny who the suspect is.

Wright killed five women in Ipswich over several months in late 2006.

He was previously the landlord of the Ferry Boat pub in King Street, Norwich.

Victoria’s body was discovered more than 20 miles away from where she was last seen in mid Suffolk several days after she went missing, with her killer never brought to justice.

It has been one of Suffolk police's longest-running unsolved murder cases.

However, the force confirmed in July 2021 that a man who had never previously been questioned over Victoria's death had been arrested as part of the probe, which has been ongoing as part of Operation Avon.

In the wake of Wednesday's arrest, Suffolk police said the man who was being questioned this week was the same person also detained two and half years prior.

The Telegraph reported back in July 2021 that it was Wright who had been arrested over Victoria's death.

When questioned by this newspaper in light of this week's news, Suffolk police again refused to confirm or deny whether Wright was the man who had been arrested.
