A villager has called for flooding problems along a 'notorious' stretch of road to be addressed after campaigners erected signs ridiculing the council for their flood management.

Ian Goodwin said flooding on the B1119 between Leiston, where he has lived all his life, and Saxmundham, has been occurring for around 10 years, leading him to launch a petition in 2020 which now has more than 500 signatures.

Despite this, he said the flood problems on the road have still not been fixed and campaigners have now created the signs in an effort to draw attention to the state of the road.

A Suffolk Highways spokesperson said teams are working to clear surface water and repair the road as soon as possible.

They also said the signs, which display statements including "For ferry crossing times contact Suffolk Highways Department", would be removed.

Mr Goodwin said: "We want to get enough support for the council to see this and be embarrassed by this, which I think they probably are.

"If the issue doesn't get sorted we will ridicule them even further, because this is just ridiculous."

The petition is calling for Suffolk Highways to clear the ditches and resolve the drainage issues on the B1119.

Mr Goodwin said other roads around Leiston and surrounding villages have had similar problems, and the flooding has caused issues for drivers and those using public transport.

"They need to sort this problem instead of just patching over them," he added.

A Suffolk Highways spokesperson said the road is currently closed for safety reasons following highway damage caused by a road traffic collision.

"Teams are working to clear the surface water and repair the road as soon as possible. The signs will also be removed," they added.
