A Suffolk estate agent has been targeted twice in as many days by vandals who threw paint and bricks at the windows as well as covering the building in graffiti scrawl.

Staff at the Leiston building reported graffiti referring to energy firm EDF, which is developing the new Sizewell C nuclear power station using language such as 'scum'.

A 42-year-old man has since been arrested after police received reports of criminal damage on December 19.

In the first incident, the windows of Druce Estate and Letting Agents in Leiston High Street were showered with black paint between 6pm and 7.30pm on Monday.

The second attack happened on Tuesday at around 10.30pm when bricks were hurled at the security glass, causing damage to ten panes, while an air rifle was also believed to have been fired at the building.

Linda Druce, a co-director of the estate agents, said graffiti was also daubed on the premises about EDF, which is building the new plant just a few miles away, with the words 'worst t**sers'.

She said Druce had let accommodation to EDF and this might explain the reasons behind the attack, adding that locks had also been glued - apparently as part of the same vandalism.

The windows, which are two panes thick, were fractured by the bricks.

Following Monday's incident, her son Oliver Druce, another co-director, had attended the site to clean off the paint.

She has expressed concerns the incidents will damage the 'good reputation' of Leiston as a town.

"With Leiston, we have always said it is a friendly place to work and live because most of our clients were from other places, so we were quite shocked by what happened.

"We just hope that it doesn't damage the good reputation of the town for hospitality.

"Maybe we are not quite Aldeburgh, but we have always felt it is a safe place and the people are quite hospitable."

Although the estate agents did not have CCTV, she said the police could get access to CCTV nearby in High Street.

"We're quite positive. We have been in the business all these years and we have not had these incidents before.

"We came to this town just over 20 years ago. We like to think that we do good business here, provide a good service, but it does not give businesses much encouragement to think that the High Street is waning and yet we have got to be careful of people vandalising the place," Linda added.

Alison Downes, from campaign group Stop Sizewell C, which is opposed to the power station plans, said: "We deplore vandalism of any kind and the opposition to Sizewell C by us and others has been entirely peaceful."

A police spokesman said: "A 42-year-old man has been arrested today following criminal damage at a business in Leiston."
