Mercedes driver banned from driving after crash in Newmarket

Police were called at just after 2.20am on Sunday, November 5 to reports that a white Mercedes C220 had crashed into a roundabout in Fordham Road in Newmarket, at the junction with Studlands Park Avenue. 

Damage was caused to the roundabout, a lamppost and a road sign as a result of the incident.

The driver had left the scene of the crash. 

Officers attended and after a search of the area located Ryan Harrison in Fordham Road, where he stated he "had an accident".

He subsequently failed a roadside breath test, providing a sample of 64mg in 100ml of breath, and was arrested.

Harrison was taken to hospital for a check-up before being taken to to Bury St Edmunds police station, where he then provided an evidential sample of 46mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. 

Harrison, of Feltwell Road in Downham Market, appeared at Suffolk Magistrates' Court in Ipswich last Friday.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess alcohol and was ordered to pay a total of £654 in fines, costs and victim surcharge. 

Harrison was also disqualified from driving for 14 months.

PC Georgia Goreham, who attended the scene, said: "It was extremely fortunate that no one was seriously harmed as a result of Ryan Harrison's reckless behaviour.

"There was considerable damage caused to his car and street furniture in the vicinity of the roundabout, which demonstrates how dangerous drink-driving is.

"As our current Christmas campaign states: ‘there is no excuse’ for driving while under the influence and we will not tolerate people who take such unnecessary risks and endanger peoples’ lives.”
