Primark is set to open a new store in Bury St Edmunds' former Debenhams store next year after a year of fitting out the building.

Here is everything we know so far about the opening.

When will the new Primark open?

The 33,300 sq ft store has remained empty since Debenhams closed in the west Suffolk town in May 2021.

It was originally planned that the new store would be open by towards the end of 2023, and the store signs went up in October.

However, Primark has now confirmed that it will be opening in March 2024.

Philippa Nibbs, Primark UK director of sales for London and the south east, said: "The construction team have been hard at work over the last few months and we’re now reaching another important milestone as we look to recruit and build a team that will make the opening a success."

The exact opening date will be confirmed nearer the time.

How many jobs will be created by the new Primark?

The retailer will be recruiting more than 100 new team members for roles including retail assistants, stockroom colleagues, and visual merchandisers, with start dates as early as February to help get the store ready for the big opening.

Job adverts were posted on Indeed in September for a store manager

What else will be going into the former Debenhams building?

The Primark will be set across two floors, with a cinema set to go into the lower ground floor.

The cinema is expected to be open by early next year.

Everyman, which is constructing the new cinema, is looking to hire for a general manager for the venue, with the salary set between £47,000 and £52,000 per annum.

As well as the cinema, there will also be a bar and restaurant area inside the building.
