Police are ready for one of their busiest nights of the year on Sunday as revellers are expected to gather to see in 2024 in Suffolk.

They are keen for people to have a good time – but warn there will be no tolerance of law-breaking over the busy night.

A Suffolk police spokesman said:  “We are now looking forward to the New Year celebrations.

"As with Christmas, these policing plans are arranged months in advance to make sure sufficient resources are in place as thousands of people across the county plan their celebrations to see in the New Year.

"Additional officers, including the Specials, will be on patrol in busy areas to ensure people visiting clubs and bars enjoy the celebrations safely.

"We have flexibility to deploy resources across the county swiftly and appropriately in response to a significant incident in a particular location.

“It’s also important to acknowledge our work extends to engaging with the partners, particularly within our licensed communities, our community safety partners and also third sector volunteer agencies, such as the town pastors, who support us in the night time economy and help identify any vulnerable individuals.

“The key thing to remember is to enjoy yourself responsibly and respect others, as reckless behaviour, such as drinking too much, can have serious consequences.

"We won’t be afraid to spoil the party if you fall foul of the law.”

The weather forecast for Sunday night and into the early hours of 2024 looks quite reasonable – it is expected to be dry and reasonably mild.

It is not just the police who could be facing a busy night – there is often a surge of calls to health services and hospital accident and emergency departments always make special arrangements for what could be a busy night.
