The Mid Suffolk Light Railway is preparing to welcome the new year with a warm glow and a fond farewell to popular locomotive Wissington.
But 2024 could be a momentous year for the railway as its own locomotive is nearly full restoration - and it is still possible that its extension to Aspall could open.
The railway has had tank engine Wissington on loan from the North Norfolk Railway for some time - it is very popular with visitors and crews.
But it returns to Sheringham after the New Year's Day Steam and Light Festival featuring historic oil lamps lighting up its main shed.
Wissington's departure comes as the Middy's own locomotive 1604 nears completion after a long restoration. Rail volunteers hope to get it steaming by the end of the year for the first time since 1970.
The Steam and Light Festival is always a popular New Year's Day event and this year should be even more accessible as a vintage bus service will be operating between Stowmarket Railway Station and the Middy's base at Brockford.
Trains will be running from late morning until about 4pm.
