The Government has announced that the timetable for investing in the new Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk will be revealed before a general election.

However, the campaign group Stop Sizewell C, which is opposed to the project, said there was still much that was unknown about whether the project could go ahead, including how the £20bn would be raised to pay for the station.

A Stop Sizewell C spokesperson said: "From our extensive discussions with officials it is clear that a Sizewell C Final Investment Decision (FID) is still some months away and the time before the next election is running out, for Rishi Sunak hasn't ruled out a May poll.

"The environmental destruction that has already taken place without that final certainty is devastating, yet there is still so much unknown, including whether the billions of pounds that would be needed can be raised, who from and whether - in these politically uncertain times - this slow, expensive and damaging project can stumble over the line before an election is called."

In parliament, energy minister Andrew Bowie faced calls from opposition Labour MPs to reveal the timetable for an FID.

Shadow business minister Sarah Jones said: "It is all well and good talking about commitments to new stations in the next parliament but can he tell us the timetable for Sizewell C in its FID?

"The Government promised to have an FID by the end of this parliament so can he give a categorical promise today that that will be done?

Mr Bowie replied: "She asks about the FID on Sizewell C, we remain committed to making that decision by the end of this parliament, and in fact on Hinkley Point C we are very proud of the progress that is being made.

"Just last month we saw the dome being lifted onto the top of reactor one."

The then business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng granted development consent for the dual reactor Sizewell C project in July 2022.
