Colchester Zoo has welcomed its newest arrival – a calf from a very cute and endangered breed.

On Tuesday, January 2, the zoo met its first new arrival of 2024, a Philippine spotted deer calf.

The calf's sex is currently not known and it remains nameless.

Autumn, the other deer, has given birth to three calves at the zoo with male Philippine spotted deer, Bongat, since they arrived from Edinburgh in 2019.

This species of deer is currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

"It’s great news that we have another addition to the family," reads the announcement from the zoo.

"It is helping towards the conservation of this species."

The zoo recently announced that it would be changing its name to the Colchester Zoological Society as of January 1, 2025.

This is part of the plans for the zoo to become a charitable trust.

The nature reserve in South Africa that is linked to the zoo has also welcomed a baby African buffalo and two leopards this week.
