Suffolk's Bernie Ecclestone and Ed Sheeran have been revealed as two of the individuals who paid the most tax in the UK last year.

Ecclestone, who was born in St Peter South Elmham near Bungay and went to school in Wissett, was named in second place in the latest edition of the Sunday Times Tax List.

Last October, the 93-year-old former boss of Formula One agreed a £652.6million settlement over tax that he was meant to pay to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) during 18 years starting in 1994.

The only person to pay more tax than Ecclestone was Alex Gerko, the billionaire founder of trading firm XTX Markets, who forked out a record sum of £664.5m, the Sunday Times researchers said.

Sheeran, who grew up in Framlingham, was revealed as having tax liability of £39.6m last year.

The 32-year-old singer started his career busking on the streets of Ipswich before being propelled to worldwide fame with the release of his debut album, +, in 2011.

Another big name from East Anglia to feature on the Tax List was Norwich-born Sir Tim Martin, the founder of pub chain JD Wetherspoon, who had a £167.1m tax liability.

The Sunday Times said the 100 individuals and families that featured on the 2024 Tax List paid a total of £5.353billion in tax to HMRC last year.

Robert Watts, the compiler of the Sunday Times Tax List, said: "This has been the highest taxing government since the Second World War and although the total tax take is up – it is only by 3.3%. Bernie Ecclestone seems to have saved Jeremy Hunt's blushes.

"The total tax found in this year's research would have been a wedge lower were it not for the vast sum shelled out by the Formula One tycoon to settle a long-running investigation."
