The first images of a three-hour fire on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds show the extent of the damage.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and Suffolk police were called to a fire in Fornham St Martin at around 9.35am today, Sunday, January 28.

Multiple outbuildings were on fire, including one shed containing tyres, which was causing the dangerous black smoke to bellow into the sky.

Three fire crews tackled the blaze while police closed the nearby B1106 Thetford Road.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service had doused the flames by around 1.15pm but remained at the scene until nearly 3pm to ensure that it was safe.

A member of staff at the nearby Tolgate Inn said: "I thought it was a bonfire at first but then I saw the fire engines going past.

"It was a bit concerning because we couldn’t serve any food until 1pm because the power went off."

The incident happened on a patch of land behind the Jardine Mini and BMW dealership, which was forced to close due to the road closure.
