World War II veteran, Douglas Felgate, celebrated his 100th birthday at Colonia Court Bupa Care Home in Colchester.

Known as Doug, he marked the milestone with a special birthday tea party with a performance by singer Pete George, surrounded by friends and residents.

In preparation of Doug's birthday, care home staff arranged a community campaign that saw him receive more than a hundred birthday cards.

Doug said: “I had a lovely time celebrating my 100th birthday.

"I can’t believe how many cards I received, including one from the King and Queen Camilla – it has all been very special.”

The home's manager, Jiji George, said: “We are honoured to have been a part of Doug’s 100th birthday celebrations.

"We always enjoy celebrating our residents’ milestone birthdays with them and do all we can to help our residents live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

Doug was born in Colchester and attended The Colchester Royal Grammar School.

At 16, he started working as a junior clerk at the Youth Employment Bureau.

At 18, Doug enlisted in the RAF as a radio mechanic.

Post-war, he came back to his clerk role in the health department, which soon led him to work for the newly-established NHS.

Doug only applied for his World War II medals in 2023, with help from Colonia Court’s activities coordinator, Dawn.

On his 99th birthday, he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star Medal, Italy Star Medal, and World War II Victory Medal by RAF members.

Colonia Court Bupa Care Home provides nursing and residential care, welcoming residents with varying health conditions including dementia, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s.
