A much-loved animal has been taken off-show temporarily at Colchester Zoo.

Visitors will be unable to see Tembo the male African elephant while essential maintenance work is carried out in the enclosure where he resides.

The zoo announced that the Elephant Bushwalk Pathway is also closed for works.

A spokeswoman for the zoo said: "We expect the works to take around two weeks, but please check our social media for the latest updates."

Colchester Zoo is set to be renamed at the start of next year.

The north Essex zoo will be known as Colchester Zoological Society as of January 1, 2025.

It is part of plans for the zoo to become a charitable trust.

For the past 60 years the attraction has been known as a privately owned zoo with a charitable arm, Action for the Wild, since 2004, which has provided much needed funds for conservation projects around the world, including the zoo's own private nature reserve in South Africa.
