The popular British shoegaze band Slowdive make an incredible come back to Norwich after over 30 years. The band headlined at the university of east Anglia’s Nick Rayns LCR on the 19th of February.

Shoegaze a style of rock music characterized by a sound in which the distinctions between separate instruments and vocals are blurred the term ‘shoegaze’ was first coined by an NME journalist attending a concert of the band moose, he noted that the bands lead singer was stood, head down for the entire set- thus shoegazing; it was very different, the crowd were jumping and dancing and singing and the atmosphere was not the same as a normal shoegaze band.

As the band walked on stage Rachell Goswell smiled at the crowd Hauntingly and the crowd erupted in anticipation, excited to hear what songs would be performed to them.

They played a plethora of songs; from haunting slow songs depicting drug use and breakups between the two lead vocalists of the band to very drum heavy songs including incredible, atmospheric rave style light shows and the crowd were completely loving it; some were even head banging.

The band played many songs from all their albums but the mostly from their 1993 album souvlaki, bringing a massive wave of nostalgia to everyone in the crowd.

One long time Slowdive fan who has seen them play live over 10 times and saw them play live when they first started their music career in 1987 said “this time was different” when asked why he explained “all the young people jumping, dancing and singing made the atmosphere so much better”; and he was right the energy was incredible, “the band were feeding off the crowds energy”.

A fan in the crowd shouted at the band “don’t wait 33 years until the next time you come to Norwich again” and the crowd screamed in agreement.
