Concerns have been raised that a new walking and cycling project in a Suffolk town could endanger the safety of pedestrians.

The fears expressed by a Woodbridge resident come on the eve of a second public engagement event about the Active Travel Woodbridge scheme, which aims to make the town's streets safer and encourage more people to walk and cycle.

The plans could see the creation of a 20mph zone in the south of the town and the town centre, while physical restrictions such as bollards could be used to close sections of roads in Bilney Road, Bullard's Lane, California and near the railway bridge on Sandy Lane.

The second engagement into the plans is set to be held at Woodbridge Community Hall on Saturday (March 9) from 9.30am to 12.30pm after the first event took place at St Mary's House in Market Hill on February 29.

However, the resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "Shared pathways will only lead to injuries. Already the cycles ride in the town centre with no respect for pedestrians. The one-way system often ignored.

"I have personally witnessed cycles causing elderly to dodge out of the way and collisions.

"I have myself almost been knocked over more than once and it isn’t easy for an elderly person to quickly change direction of walking without pain or injury.

"Electric cycles are even more dangerous to pedestrians."

Suffolk County Council has received £5 million from Government agency Active Travel England to improve walking and cycling facilities in the town.

The resident added: "Don’t force it on us because you have bid for money that has condition of spending on projects not wanted by locals.

"Instead clean the area up, repair the damaged roads and many dangerous footpaths.

"Also enforce the Highway Code laws for cycles as most ignore them."

However, Woodbridge Mayor Eamonn O'Nolan said: "I can say on a personal level that I am totally in favour of any measures which improve safety, make it easier for people to walk and cycle around the town."

The county council has been approached for comment.
