Three months of work to improve a flood-hit section of the A47 will begin early next week.

National Highways will be installing new drains, kerbs and road surfaces on the almost half-mile stretch between Sussex Road and Lowestoft Lighthouse from Monday.

The work will be carried out in phases to reduce the impact and is being conducted now to avoid the summer holidays and peak tourist season.

Lasting around 12 weeks, the scheme will see a number of roads closed and temporary traffic lights put up in the work area which is likely to cause delays throughout.

The phases are:

Phase One

From March 18 to March 29 there will be two-way traffic lights between Sussex Road and The Ravine, with closures in Sussex Road and Park Road where they meet the A47.

From March 22 to March 24 the A47 between Sussex Road and Lowestoft Lighthouse will be closed from 8pm to 6am every night.

Phase Two

Starting on April 1 and running until mid-May, two-way traffic lights will be placed between The Ravine and Lowestoft Lighthouse.

There will also be closures in Sussex Road, Corton Road, North Parade and Royal Avenue where they meet the A47.

From April 8 to April 12, the A47 between Sussex Road and Lowestoft Lighthouse will be closed overnight and then from April 26 to April 29 it will be closed completely.

Phase Three

Two-way traffic lights will be placed between Park Road and Lowestoft Lighthouse from mid-May to mid-June, as well as a closure of Sussex Road where it meets the A47.

In late May there will be three nights of closures of the A47 between Sussex Road and Lowestoft Lighthouse.

According to National Highways, the work will likely cause some noisy periods and while the A47 is closed traffic will be directed via the A1144 and the A1117.
