An historic and well-known pub near the River Orwell in Suffolk is set to get additional dining space and an upgraded kitchen after plans for a revamp were approved.

East Suffolk Council has given permission for alterations and extensions to the Ship Inn at Levington, south-east of Ipswich, to provide an extension to the east which will "significantly improve" the indoor dining area and will enable the dining room to accommodate 70 diners.

In addition, a proposed new terrace will be able to offer outdoor dining to a further 60 people.

He said: "In its current form the business cannot expand to meet the demand of this very picturesque and pleasantly situated public house which is sited at the eastern end of Levington."

He added that the expansion of the dining facilities needed to be supported by an upgrade and expansion of the "extremely modest existing kitchen and supporting facilities".
