A former Royal British Legion (RBL) building in east Suffolk has been demolished.

The building, which was formerly known as Goyfield House, in Mill Lane in Felixstowe has been knocked down after plans to build 58 retirement homes were revealed last month

Photos now show the former building is no more as demolition work began on March 8.

In February, Churchill Retirement Living announced their plans saying the new homes would "improve health and wellbeing" and "meet the housing needs" of older people in the town.

The apartments will be aimed at over-60s who want to carry on living independently as they get older while being a part of a retirement living community.

A spokesman for Churchill Retirement Living said: “Retirement housing is the most effective form of residential development for generating local economic growth, local jobs and increasing high street spend as it brings regular shoppers closer to the town centre.

"Our proposed development would help improve the health and wellbeing of those who live there and meet the housing needs of many older people in Felixstowe and the surrounding area."

The site has been left empty since the RBL closed in 2020 after declining membership left it in a precarious position financially. It had been in operation for nearly 90 years, dating back to the 1930s.

Since the building has stood derelict it has been subject to break-ins, as well as graffiti and damage.

A planning application for the retirement homes is being prepared.
