A multi-national company is investing millions of pounds in its Suffolk liquid fertiliser terminal as it strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Fertiliser giant Yara is pouring £7m into its liquid fertiliser terminal at Chedburgh, near Bury St Edmunds as it upgrades the site.

Reducing the terminal’s carbon footprint will be at the forefront of all its decisions, from installing new boilers to adapting processes, it said.

The terminal upgrade is part of an investment programme across Britain aimed at ensuring safe and efficient operations and high quality products for its farmer customers, it added.

Yara - a £15bn turnover Norwegian multi-national company - employs 17,000 people worldwide and operates in more than 60 countries.

It makes more than 300 grades of liquid fertiliser. and delivers them directly to farming customers from its terminals.

The Chedburgh plant - one of several Yara facilities across the UK - produces nitrogen and sulphur grade and compound NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) grade fertilisers.

Rebuild works will begin post-season. A bulk solids raw material store and production building will be upgraded - and the company aims to have them fully operational by spring 2025.

Terminal manager for UK liquids Martin Saunders said: “The quality and integrity of our product is synonymous with our brand, and something we are proud to deliver to our customers.

"Manufacturing the product ourselves here in the UK allows us to guarantee great product quality from factory to farm.”

Head of crop nutrition services Phil Burrell said investing in cutting-edge technology and infrastructure meant they could not only meet but exceed the evolving needs of customers by  offering climate-friendly nutrition across a full range of crops.

“With the launch of this groundbreaking terminal, we reaffirm our dedication to innovation, quality, and customer-centricity," he said.
