The manager of a restaurant has recalled the moment he and several others rushed to help the victim of a stabbing in broad daylight earlier this week.

At about 5.50pm on Wednesday, police were called to reports of an incident within the car park at The Rookery, near the Guineas shopping centre, in Newmarket.

A man in his 20s had suffered serious stab wounds after he was approached by a group of four males and attacked.

Matt Sore, general manager of The Pantry, a nearby restaurant, has recalled how he ran to the scene with a first aid kit to offer help to the man, who he said had suffered a knife wound in the groin area.

Mr Sore said two members of security and a nurse also came to the man's aid.

"There are some really good people that did help out on the evening until the ambulance got there. The ambulance and police did arrive very quickly as well," he said.

"It is absolutely not something I have seen before. I have lived in Newmarket my whole life. I have seen some things, but nothing like that.

"In broad daylight, an actual stabbing - you don't see that very often."

Rachel Hood, who represents Exning and Newmarket on Suffolk County Council, said the community had an "altogether magnificent response" to the incident.

"I am informed by eye-witnesses that the ambulance crew and police arrived very quickly and acted immediately," she said.

"Prior to that, an off-duty nurse who happened to be in the Market Square, immediately sprang into action and worked to stop the bleed from the victim’s upper thigh.

"The on-duty manager of The Pantry restaurant witnessed the extent of the injury and provided his First Aid Kit."

She added: "Whilst the incident itself is extremely unusual for Newmarket, I must say that we should all be very proud of our selfless and brave Newmarket community members who acted so professionally and bravely when confronted with such an unexpected and life-threatening situation."

On Friday, a Suffolk police spokesperson said a 19-year-old man had been arrested on Thursday on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

He was taken to Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre for questioning.

A 14-year-old boy was also arrested on Thursday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

He too was taken to Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre for questioning and was then bailed to return to police on July 2.

A 37-year-old woman was arrested in Haverhill on Wednesday on suspicion of assisting offenders.

She was taken to Bury police investigation centre for questioning and was bailed to return to police on July 2.

Officers believe the stabbing is a "contained incident" as the people involved are known to each other.

The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
