An American fast food chain is preparing to open a new outlet in a former Next store.

The fashion retailer closed the doors of its store in Colchester High Street two years ago, meaning shoppers had to travel to its out-of-town shop at Tollgate Shopping Centre in Stanway.

Colchester City Council has announced fast food chain Wendy's is taking over the unit to open its second outlet in the town.

Last year the chain opened the UK's second drive-thru at the Northern Gateway just off the A12 near Colchester United Football Club.

A spokesman for the council said: "The fast food giant has confirmed they're opening a second store on Colchester High Street.

"Expect to see a new branch begin to take shape in the former Next store in the coming months."

It comes after other developments for the city were announced at the end of last year.

The former Debenhams in Culver Street West is being transformed into a leisure space featuring a trampoline park, go karting, laser quest and an axe-throwing bar.
