The mother of a 16-year-old boy whose foot was run over during Ipswich Town's promotion parade has said her son is making a "miraculous recovery".
Lewis Carpenter, from Hadleigh, was following the crowd with some friends while the Ipswich Town players were aboard the open top bus on Monday.
As it turned a corner in Soane Street, one of the wheels ran over his foot.
His mother, Charlotte was out shopping at the time and suddenly got a call from one of her son’s friends saying Lewis’ foot had been run over.
She said: “I could hear him screaming on the phone. I just dropped the shopping and ran to the car.”
She explained what happened to him from what she has heard: “All the players saw him lying there and they were screaming for the bus to stop.
“The whole of the wheel was over his foot and it had to reverse.
“A police officer helped him and he dragged himself off and collapsed on the side of the road where a lovely friend he was with helped him until the ambulance arrived and he was blue lighted to Ipswich Hospital.”
She added: “They were worried that the blood supply to the foot had gone and that he might lose the use of his foot because they couldn’t find a pulse.
“Then it was like a miracle and there was still a blood supply to his foot and there was not even a broken bone or a fracture. The tissues had been crushed and he has two lacerations from the heat of the tire on his skin. He is very very lucky.
“They X-rayed it several times because it was so unbelievable.”
Now she says she hopes for a quick full recovery: “He’s obviously in pain but he is dealing with it really well. I’m sure he will recover quickly because he’s young and fit.”
Mrs Carpenter added: “People have blamed Lewis on social media but it was a freak accident. People are so quick to judge, it’s so wrong. He’s a really good kid.”
After he got out of hospital, Lewis sent an Instagram message thanking British and Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion boxer Fabio Wardley who was also in the bus and shouted out to him “are you ok?” after he was run over.
Wardley replied and said he was glad to hear he is doing alright.
