Fire breaks out at Sackers plant in Great Blakenham

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is attending a fire at Sackers, a waste recycling site in Great Blakenham, on Wednesday morning.

Crews received the call at 9.11am.

Appliances from Ipswich East, Princes Street and Needham Market fire stations were sent to the scene in the village.

There have been a number of fires at the plant in recent years. (Image: Lucy Taylor) Sackers has seen several fires over the years, often caused by batteries that have been incorrectly disposed of.

The last time there was a major fire at the plant it caused widespread disruption across the county and region.

On August 8, 2024, a fire led to all Greater Anglia lines being blocked, which affected train services at Ipswich station to and from Norwich, Cambridge and Ely.

The fire was reported as extinguished at 10.18am, however crews remain on the scene to continue damping down and checking other areas.

There have been no casualties.
