Aldi has put forward an application to Babergh District Council to vary two conditions for the vacant home improvement shop in Waldingfield Road in Sudbury.
Removal of the first condition would allow the supermarket to sell food and convenience goods, which the building is currently restricted to do so.
The second condition would mean minor works could take place to enable the site to become a supermarket.
Minor alterations would be made to the car park, while the store entrance would also be reconfigured.
A block plan for the premises show a section of the store would be allocated for self-service checkouts.
A smaller area of the site would be sub-let for a separate unit.
It was revealed in May that the new store could open in "late 2025/early 2026" after the smaller unit was put on the market.
The current Aldi supermarket, in Girling Street, has also been listed.
