A Great Blakenham resident has described a road leading out of the village as “an absolute pigsty” - accusing local authorities of neglecting basic maintenance.
Jamie Yates, an international key account manager who lives in the village and frequently travels along the road between Bramford and Claydon - Bramford Road and the B1113 – recorded a video of the rubbish.
The road is near Suffolk County Council’s SUEZ energy from waste plant and waste can be seen strewn in the middle of the road – which Mr Yates claims likely comes from surrounding landfill sites.
“It’s just ridiculous,” Mr Yates said.
“You’ve got all this waste that spills from lorries or blows from the sites, it gets into the long grass, and then Suffolk Highways come along and strim it.
“But because there’s no litter pick beforehand, the machines shred it into tiny pieces and leave it behind.”
Yates, who has lived in the area for several years, said the problem has worsened in 2025.
“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen it,” he said.
“The council love to scream about their green agendas and yet right on their doorstep it’s an absolute pigsty.”
He also claimed that communication between local authorities and different departments is lacking.
“It falls between the gaps of the council. Highways says it’s not their responsibility to do the litter picking.”
Yates added: “Great Blakenham has grown a lot, and now it’s the centre of Suffolk’s recycling industry. But we’re left living in a mess. It’s embarrassing.”
A Mid Suffolk District Council spokesperson, said: “All of Suffolk’s councils - including ours - take the issue of roadside litter extremely seriously.
"It’s not only unsightly and dangerous, it also gives a poor impression of our region to visitors.
“While the safety of our operatives remains paramount - especially on high-speed roads - our teams are able to clear litter on roads that are 40mph or less where resources allow, so we’ve asked our REACT team to visit the B1113 Bramford Road.
“Littering is a criminal offence. If you witness it, we urge you to report it when safe to do so - including the date, time, location, what was littered and any vehicle registration number.”
A Suffolk County Council spokesperson added: “There are a number of private waste operators and traders working in the area.
"For those that work with the county council, we have assurances that our contractors are taking all practicable steps to prevent waste from escaping from their vehicles, and they have agreed to monitor this more closely in the coming weeks.
“However, no-one likes to see litter in the area – so we are currently speaking with all our waste partners and the district council to work together to get the area cleaned up.”
