The chief executive of a Suffolk NHS Trust has announced his retirement a week after a hospital’s damning CQC report.
After more than 40 years of work in the NHS and social care, chief executive of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) Nick Hulme has announced his plans to retire next year.
This paper understands that the ESNEFT team received the news in an email this morning.
The ESNEFT Trust Board has asked Adrian Marr, the deputy chief executive and director of finance, to take on the role of interim chief executive from the New Year.
The recruitment process for Mr Hume’s successor will be undertaken by a new chairperson, who has yet to be appointed.
It comes a week after a CQC report of an inspection into medical care services at Colchester Hospital was published, which rated the hospital ‘requires improvement’.
After its inspection in April, the CQC raised concerns about the hospital’s use of its corridors for treating patients, about mental health patients receiving the appropriate care, staff not having special training, and controlled drugs found in an open trolley.
Mr Hulme said action has been taken to address the areas identified for improvement and welcomed the feedback.
Mr Hulme was appointed Chief Executive of Ipswich Hospital in January 2013 and became Chief Executive of Colchester Hospital in May 2016, prior to the merge to form ESNEFT in 2018.
His first management role was in sexual health services before being appointed to senior leadership roles in operational and general management across large and complex trusts.
