Aldi could open inside Sudbury Homebase in early 2027

Aldi is eyeing a move from its current store in Girling Street, Sudbury, into the former Homebase in Waldingfield Road.

The new branch could open in early 2027, a spokesman for the supermarket said.

Aldi submitted a range of planning applications to Babergh District Council, including the removal of conditions which would prevent it from selling food.

However, these were withdrawn this week following discussions with the district council.

Roland Stanley, real estate director at Aldi said: "Aldi are still very much committed to our proposals for a new food store on the former Homebase site in Sudbury.

"Originally, three separate planning applications were submitted to allow Aldi to occupy the building.

"Following discussions with the council, these have been combined into a single application that covers both the necessary building changes and permission to sell food and convenience goods. The other two applications were withdrawn simply because they were no longer needed."

Mr Stanley added the supermarket is "looking forward to delivering a better experience for customers" and "improved access to its range of products.

Plans for the vacant Homebase store include dividing it into two units.

Aldi is earmarked to take on the larger unit, while there would be a smaller, second premises would be sub-let to a trade counter, retail or café premises. 

Sudbury Town Council gave its backing to the move at a meeting of its planning and highways committee in July.

The supermarket chain put its current Sudbury store on the market as part of its ambition to move to the new site.

Homebase's former premises has been vacant since the retail giant fell into administration at the beginning of the year.
