The owner of a popular visitor attraction has described a national industry award as "fantastic" recognition for his team and supporters.

Jimmy Doherty, who runs Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park in Wherstead just outside Ipswich, shared his delight after the site was named VisitEngland’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year.

The award recognises excellence and outstanding visitor experiences across the country.

Mr Doherty, a TV presenter and conservationist, said the win reflects the dedication of everyone involved with the attraction.

He said: "To be placed there is fantastic.

"I think it’s really great recognition for all our staff and all the hard work that’s been put in, but also all our lovely visitors as well, because we couldn’t do it without them.

"It’s amazing to get this award. You don’t really expect it, really.

"We’re absolutely over the moon."

Jimmy’s Farm beat out Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, which took silver, and Attwell Farm Park in Worcestershire, which won bronze.

Mr Doherty also highlighted the wider impact of the award on the county.

He said: "We really like to think that at Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, we’re part of the community, but also a much bigger community beyond Suffolk as well.

"We’ve had so many people in the local community say, ‘This is great for the area as well,’ and hopefully it’ll bring more people into Suffolk to see what a great county it is.

"We’ve got so many great attractions here and a fantastic coastline, and we’re just glad to be part of that community."

The park is home to more than 100 species and breeds, including Europe's largest polar bear reserve.
