A140 speed limits reduced from Thornham Magna and Stoke Ash

A 40mph speed limit has been temporarily introduced along the A140, between Thornham Magna and Stoke Ash.

A spokesperson for Suffolk County Council said: "The road surface of the A140 was damaged due to the extremely high temperatures experienced across the county in the last couple of weeks.

"To help keep road users safe, a temporary 40mph speed limit has been put in place during the current hot weather, with the site continuing to be monitored to help determine when this can be lifted."

This comes as Suffolk Highways has confirmed an urgent closure on the A143 in Stanton, which also suffered damage due to the high temperatures.

A spokesman for Suffolk Highways said: " Any further updates and additional information will be issued in due course."

The council had only announced on Monday its plans to carry out repair works later in the summer to repair the tarmac deformed during Suffolk’s hottest day of the year in June.

To protect the road surface during the heatwave, a temporary 30mph speed limit has been introduced and gravel has been laid on the road.
