A12 roadworks and maintenance

Closures:
A12 southbound closures are planned near Ipswich from September 7 while National Highways repairs Birchwood Road Bridge after it was struck by a vehicle.
The work is scheduled to last three weeks and includes overnight A12 closures, lane restrictions and full weekend closures of Birchwood Road.
The latest Sizewell C update said resurfacing works were planned on the northbound A12 along the Ufford and Wickham Market bypass section, with night closures from 8pm to 5am between April 17 and April 24.
Further traffic management has also been needed for new pedestrian crossings and junction improvements along the A12, including schemes at Marlesford and Little Glemham.

Future of the A12 and possible improvements
The most significant current changes to the A12 in Suffolk are linked to the Sizewell C project.
Friday Street and Yoxford roundabouts were opened in March 2026, with the improvements intended to make two key A12 junctions safer and support the movement of construction traffic away from local communities.
A new 6.5km link road is also being developed around the Friday Street area to take Sizewell-bound traffic away from the A12.
Earlier full-weekend works at the A12/A1094 junction required a diversion of almost 50 miles, underlining the potential impact of major closures on east Suffolk journeys.
Elsewhere, further schemes have included improved lay-bys near Hacheston and Wickham Market to help manage escorted wide-load HGV movements, as well as pedestrian crossings and junction upgrades in villages along the route.
