Five Suffolk fish and chip shops where you can eat in

As evenings draw in, here are five Suffolk chippies where you can stay warm and enjoy fish and chips on a plate.

1. The Upper Deck, Aldeburgh

The Upper Deck is perfect for hiding from the cool sea breeze in Aldeburgh.

Above the Golden Galleon on Aldeburgh High Street, The Upper Deck is the sit-down sister restaurant of Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop, which has fried in beef dripping since 1967.

The Cooney family opened the restaurant in 2000, serving the same fish and chips in a quieter, more intimate setting.

It is one of Aldeburgh’s best-loved dining rooms, but it does not take phone bookings, so arrive early for the queues.

2. Fish Dish, Felixstowe

Housed in a distinctive grey building overlooking Felixstowe Pier, Fish Dish was ranked among the UK's top fish and chip restaurants by Fry Magazine.

Alongside battered cod and chips, the menu includes steak and onion pie, grilled chicken skewers, lamb chops and whole grilled sea bream.

Near the River Deben, this Woodbridge favourite has a small dining area and a bar serving wine, beer and spirits.

Fresh fish comes in light, crisp batter with fluffy, golden chips.

It is a handy stop on the walk between Woodbridge and Melton, with views of the town’s historic marinas and Sutton Hoo.

4. Seashell, Halesworth

This family-run Bridge Street restaurant is a popular fish and chip shop and serves generous portions of cod, haddock and rock in light, crisp batter.

Everything is cooked to order using locally sourced ingredients.

Ranked number one of the top restaurants in Ipswich on TripAdvisor, this family-run seafood restaurant on Upper Brook Street proves you do not need to be on the coast for outstanding fish and chips.

Its unassuming exterior looks like a traditional chippy, but inside it is a sit-down restaurant with table service and a drinks menu.

Alongside cod and chips, the kitchen serves seafood platters, grilled sea bass, lobster, scallops and vegan and vegetarian dishes.

It is popular for special occasions, with staff known for going the extra mile.
