A man who worked in stock management at a family-run Suffolk butchery has denied stealing the equivalent of more than £7,500.

Joseph Walton, 22, appeared at Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with theft by employee.

The alleged offences relate to Reubens Butcher, Deli & Bottle Shop, a family-run business based at the Old Station House in Melton, near Woodbridge. The business was rebranded from Fodder earlier this year. More recently, the company announced plans to take over the former Darsham Station Emporium site.

The court heard Walton is accused of stealing cash and other items, described in court documents as “food items”, from the business between January 2 and July 13 this year. Prosecutors allege the total value of the items stolen was £7,500.

Walton, of Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, pleaded not guilty and elected for his case to be heard at Ipswich Crown Court, where he will appear on November 23 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
