AN IPSWICH man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a horrific collision which left the A12 closed for several hours.

A spokeswoman for Essex Police said that the 50-year-old man from Ipswich has been released on police bail to December 22 pending further enquiries following the crash which took place on September 26.

Officers have also today named the woman who died in the collision, which saw a BMW fly off the A12 and plough into the pillars of a bridge, as Mafalda Sofia Do Nascimento Pio, of Bramford Lane in Ipswich.

A former police officer who stopped to help those involved described the scene as “horrific” and said it was the worst accident he had ever seen.

The road was closed off after the accident to allow the wreckage to be cleared and accident investigators time to examine the scene.
