The A12 at Colchester has reopened following emergency repair work, which had earlier closed a six -mile stretch of the road.
The northbound carriageway of the road was closed from junction 27 for central Colchester to junction 29 for the A120, near Ardleigh.
Drivers were warned to expect long delays as a result of the closure. A diversion is in operation through Colchester along the A133 and A1232 Ipswich Road, with queues backing up along the route.
The dual carriageway had reopened by 3.30pm.
