The A120 was closed between Coggeshall and Marks Tey yesterday after a fallen tree brought down power cables.
Highways England (formerly the Highways Agency) took the decision to close the road for safety reasons.
The A120 was closed in both directions between the A131 and the A12.
Motorists were forced to find alternative routes, and there was slow traffic along the A1124 between Wakes Colne and Eight Ash Green as a result and on other surrounding routes.
Highways England had originally reported the road was not expected to re-open until 10pm, but the closure was lifted around 8pm.
