Motorists were asked to avoid the area for the duration of the closure and were force to find alternative routes.

Alastair McCraw, who represents Brantham on Babergh District Council, said: “The loss of life is a tragedy of course.

“My sympathies to those affected.”

Mr McCraw said he was concerned to hear that highways officials investigating the scene of the crash had been met with abuse by drivers following the road closure.

“The abuse being given to highways officials because of the road closure and signage was completely unacceptable,” said Mr McCraw.

Suffolk police are now appealing for more information regarding the collision and are asking for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information – including anyone with dash cam footage of the incident - is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference CAD 458 of 26 August.
