FORMER Ipswich Town and England defender Kevin Beattie today said he felt “absolutely fantastic” after receiving a special medal for his part in the Blues' 1981 UEFA Cup triumph.

Beattie was presented with the medal by UEFA president Michel Platini at the UEFA Cup final between Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester last night.

The Town legend missed the 1981 final against AZ Alkmaar through injury, although he played a major part in the previous rounds which included a 1-4 away win over St Etienne, for whom Platini played at the time.

After receiving his medal, Beattie said: “After 27 years it means a lot to me. When you have got legends like Michel Platini, Sir Alex Ferguson and Denis Law in the room, it really is like a dream come true.”

Rangers lost the final after second-half goals from Igor Denisov and Konstantin Zyrianov.
