Gadgets like those used to help put two criminals behind bars are being given away to shield more households from burglars.
Police are giving 50 doorbell cameras to recent break-in victims in an effort to enhance home security and cut crime.
Last September, one helped seal the conviction of Neil Charles, who was jailed for four years after admitting three attempted burglaries in Bury St Edmunds.
Charles, of Beaumont Close, triggered a doorbell camera as he attempted to burgle a home in Horsecroft Road, which he admitted trying to break into on two occasions after seeing footage.
Meanwhile, a youth recently received 12 months in custody for a number of offences, including an attempted burglary in Ipswich, where he was caught on camera.
Detective Superintendent Andy Smith said: “There is no doubt that the quality of footage from the video doorbell captured during these offences led to guilty pleas in both cases.
Home security firm Ring supplied the cameras for properties targeted by burglars, or in susceptible areas of Ipswich.
Det Supt Smith added: “It has been really gratifying for us to deliver this enhanced service and we hope these cameras will bring some peace of mind to victims.
“We recognise the huge potential for technology, such as video doorbells and other remote monitored security cameras, to help catch criminals and prevent crime.”
Police recorded 2,172 burglaries in the 12 months to September 2017, compared with 1,362 in 2016.

Det Supt Smith said: “I’d take this opportunity to remind everyone that burglary remains a priority for our force, and that we will take robust action against anyone we suspect to be involved in this type of crime.”
