ST George was hunting for bargains rather than dragons after riding into Bury St Edmunds.
The patron Saint’s arrival yesterday coincided with the launch of ‘Free from 3’ parking, a joint initiative by St Edmundsbury Borough Council and town centre business improvement group Bid4 Bury to increase footfall.
Mark Cordell, chief executive of Bid4 Bury, said he hoped the presence of St George would help trade but claimed the knight was also about national pride.
He added: “It’s a bit of personal crusade. I think we English should be a bit more proud of our heritage. It’s promoting being English but also, come in and enjoy Bury. After all, according to Napoleon, we’re a nation of shopkeepers.”
