A student from Barrow has been inspired to take his passion for computer games even further.

Josh Innes, 15, a Year 10 student at King Edward VI School in Bury St Edmunds, saw success with a game he designed at a Games Jam event at West Suffolk College in the town.

He earned the title ‘best videogame design’ and won a games voucher.

Josh was one of nine students representing King Edward VI School at the two-day event, which gave youngsters the chance to develop a game and get advice from industry professionals.

Josh, who is a keen gamer, said he would like to pursue a career designing video games, adding the Games Jam had given him an extra boost to achieve his goal.

His mother Charlotte Monksfield said she was “very proud” of Josh’s achievement.

His graphic products teacher Dennis Buhr said the event at the college last week had been “really good”.

“I’m just glad they took part. It was quite satisfying to have one of ours win a prize. It’s good to develop that and grow it in Bury so there’s a little bit more of a game design community, and develop it in school as well so this is happening a bit more and becomes more of a recognised part of education.”

The college’s Games Jam involved at least 60 young people. Event organiser Ian Newman, of West Suffolk College, said: “It’s all about fun, but also we mix education in with it.

“They are learning these fantastic programming skills and also talking to professionals and getting some advice and guidance about what they might want to do in the future.

“The games industry is very large nationally in the UK, but we don’t have a big games industry in the region.”
