One of the best-known curry houses in Ipswich has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a huge gift to a charity supporting villages in Bangladesh.
The Maharani in Norwich Road opened in 1989 and quickly established a fine reputation. Under its current owner Manik Miah – who has owned it for 22 – years it has regularly featured in British Curry Awards ceremonies.
Mr Miah held two special evenings this week at which guests raised well over £1,800 for the MNN Foundation, which was set up to help villages in his home country.
The Foundation helps provide health care and education in the villages – and the money raised by Mr Miah’s guests will help to establish a new maternity clinic which will provide free services to the poorest members of society.
Mr Miah said: “I am delighted to celebrate the anniversary and to have been able to raise this money which will really make a difference in Bangladesh.”
Among the guests over the two nights were Ipswich mayor Bill Quinton, his deputy Hamil Clarke and representatives from business, education, and civic organisations in the town.
