Debenham-based cider and vinegar makerAspall is supporting the World Pickled Egg Championships for the second year running today.
The contest takes place at Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival in Snape, and entrants will be vying for an ‘Egg Cup’ trophy as well as a £500 cash prize, with winners to be announced tomorrow.
The eggs will be judged on appearance, aroma, and texture of yolk and egg white.
A social media campaign encouraged entrants from around the world, with the most far-flung entrant sent from the US.
The judging panel includes Val Warner, celebrity chef and author; Madalene Bonvini-Hamel, chef, author and co-owner of Suffolk restaurant The British Larder, Emma Crowhurst, TV chef and cookery writer for the East Anglian Daily Times, and Henry Chevallier Guild, Aspall partner.
Henry said: “We are extremely excited to be supporting the World Pickled Egg Championships for a second year running. For us, this is the start of what will become an upweighted campaign in 2014 to highlight vinegar as a hugely versatile kitchen companion. It is also a wonderful promotion of rare and forgotten bar snacks which we hope to bring back to consumers’ snacking repertoires.”
Mike Keen, owner of The Brewery Tap, Ipswich, who founded the World Pickled Egg Championships last year, said: “Pickled eggs are like Marmite: people either love them or hate them, but I see it as our duty to find more people who love them, and celebrate such bar snacks of yore. This is something which we like to encourage throughout the year and will usually have a selection of homemade pork pies, scotch eggs, sausage rolls and pork crackling available for our customers to try in the pub.”
