BLUSTERY winds forced the closure of Britain’s biggest container port today.
Officials at the Port of Felixstowe said wind speeds along the coast had exceeded operational limits, gusting at more than 45mph.
The port was closed for a few hours from 3am and then again at 11.45am with both rail and yard operations affected.
“For the safety of all port users we are currently restricting access to operational areas,” said a spokesman.
“Vehicles are being marshalled on site and will be processed through to operational areas as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Some delays to hauliers were likely and truckers were advised to consider re-scheduling their arrivals.
Operation Stack is not in place at this time.
