FELIXSTOWE: Strong winds have forced operations at Britain’s biggest container port to be suspended.
Officials at the Port of Felixstowe said the latest forecast showed that both quayside and landside operations would be affected until at least midnight as the tail-end of Hurricane Katia continues to sweep across the UK.
It is too dangerous for the high-rise quayside cranes to work once wind speeds reach 45mph.
At the moment vehicles are being marshalled inside the port, and Operation Stack is not in use.
If the winds persist and too many vehicles arrive – around 300 can be parked on port – HGVs will be taken off the A14 at Seven Hills and sent to the holding area at Levington.
